There seems to be a day for everything - doughnuts, Star Wars and yes, even sewing machines! And today I discovered that that day was today! So I thought I'd write a short post on these brilliant machines!
Here's my machine. It's a JL250 which is basically a Janome machine branded especially for John Lewis. I bought it second hand from Frank Nutts in Kings Heath after my Singer - a gift from my parents for my graduation - died a slow and noisy death. It's beautiful, so smooth and quiet, and even has a speedometer with cute little tortoise and hare pics!
For me, this machine does everything it needs to. I'm not a professional seamstress and I'm not into doing upholstery involving heavier weight fabrics. This is perfectly sufficient even with all those fancy stitches that I'll probably never use! It has an automatic button hole maker with special foot (soooooooo ace!) and a needle threader which I find takes much longer than poking the thread through the needle myself!
I've seen a couple of interesting pictures on social media today so I thought I'd share them here. This first was shared by Simplicity New Look on Facebook today and I LOVE IT!!!
Sewing machines make our lives so much easier. I couldn't imagine the time needed to make a full, layered gown in the 17th or 18th century (fun fact: the first sewing machine was invented in 1790), and to be honest I wouldn't be sewing now if I had to do it all by hand!
I often sew with a glass of wine... Maybe I shouldn't... ;)
There is a machine for everyone and for every purpose. So on #NationalSewingMachineDay lets take a moment to appreciate these clever little machines that make our lives much easier and SO much more fun! If you've never tried sewing, I'd suggest you give it a go, it's brill!!!
